Can you drive with foreign licenses

Driving licenses in Spain: exchanging foreign licenses and getting a Spanish license

Driving becomes one of the first practical questions for people who move to Spain or plan to spend a significant part of the year here. Marbella and the Costa del Sol are a region where a car is needed in many cases: distances between areas, trips to schools, Malaga airport, and travel around Andalusia. That is why it is important to understand in advance how to drive legally in Spain, in which cases a foreign license can be exchanged for a Spanish one, and in which cases you will have to take the exams again.

In this guide, we will look at the rules for recognizing foreign licenses, the exchange procedure, and how to get a Spanish license from scratch.

Much depends on your status and the country that issued the license.

Tourists and non-residents can drive with their national licenses for a limited period. If needed, they must have an international driving permit or an official translation.

Residents, meaning those who live in Spain for more than 6 months, must bring their licenses in line with Spanish requirements. After 6 months from the date you obtained resident status, in most cases you cannot continue driving with a foreign license, and a fine applies for violations.

The validity period of a foreign driving license in Spain in any case cannot exceed 10 years from the date it was issued. If, under the laws of another country, the license is issued without an end date, the driver must obtain a Spanish license within 2 years from being recognized as a resident.

License exchange: who is eligible

Exchanging a foreign license for a Spanish one is a much simpler process than getting a license from scratch. However, it is not available to everyone.

Licenses from EU and European Economic Area countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), as well as from Andorra, Switzerland, and Monaco, are exchanged under existing agreements using a simplified procedure.

Licenses from other countries can be exchanged only if there is a bilateral agreement on license exchange between that country and Spain. The full up-to-date list of such countries is published on the official resources of the Spanish road authority DGT.

If there is no exchange agreement between your country and Spain, you cannot exchange your license. You will have to obtain a Spanish license through the general process, taking both the theory and practical exams.

Important exchange conditions:

The license must be valid and genuine.

Only residents with a valid TIE card can apply for an exchange and receive a Spanish license.

The issue date of the foreign license must be earlier than the date you obtained resident status in Spain. If you received the license after you applied for residency, it will not be exchanged.

Spain generally does not exchange licenses that have already been exchanged (meaning those obtained as a result of an exchange in another country).

How the exchange works

The exchange procedure for countries that have an agreement with Spain usually includes the following steps.

Preparing the document package: passport, TIE card, the original driving license (which is taken away), a certificate confirming you passed the psychophysical check, photos, an application for exchange, and a receipt for payment of the state fee.

Psychophysical check. It is carried out in specialized centers, in Spanish centro de reconocimiento de conductores. This is a small medical check for fitness to drive for one year, in Spanish aptitud psicofísica.

Authenticity check. The Spanish road authority DGT requests confirmation of your license from the country that issued it. That is why it is important that the license is valid and does not raise questions.

Receiving a temporary document. After confirmation, you are given a temporary authorization that allows you to drive until you receive the plastic Spanish license, which arrives by mail.

Do not delay submitting your exchange application: after the set deadlines, completing the formalities can become significantly more difficult.

Getting a Spanish license from scratch

If your country does not have an exchange agreement with Spain, or you want to get a license for the first time, you will have to go through the full process.

Psychophysical check to confirm fitness to drive.

Theory exam. To be allowed to take the exam, you need a resident TIE card. The exam consists of 30 questions, and you have about one minute for each. You can prepare on your own or with a driving school, in Spanish autoescuela, where the instructor helps you understand difficult topics.

Practical exam. Demonstrating car driving skills in real road conditions.

Most candidates prepare through a driving school, which increases the chances of passing successfully on the first attempt.

Driving license categories

In Spain, there are more than 10 license categories. The most common are:

Category B. The most common category for passenger cars with an authorized weight of up to 3500 kg and no more than 9 seats, including the driver. It also allows you to drive a vehicle with a light trailer within the set limits.

Motorcycle categories: AM for mopeds and light quad bikes from age 15, A1 for motorcycles up to 125 cc from age 16, A2 for more powerful motorcycles from age 18, A for motorcycles of any power from age 20, with experience in category A2.

For all motorcycle categories, it is mandatory to use a certified helmet and gloves when riding on roads.

Useful to know

Spain uses a points system for fines: each driver has a certain balance of points, which are deducted for violations. If all points are lost, the driving right is suspended, and it can be restored through special courses.

Alcohol limits for drivers are strict, especially for beginner drivers.

Rules are updated from time to time, so you should check the current requirements on the DGT website.

Driving and life in Marbella

For families and investors settling in Marbella, legal driving is an important part of comfortable living. A car gives access to everything the region offers: from international schools and sports clubs to day trips to Granada, Seville, or Ronda.

It is recommended to sort out your license status in advance: check whether your country has an exchange agreement with Spain, and plan the exchange or license acquisition procedure alongside other adaptation steps, such as applying for NIE, registering your address (padrón), and obtaining residency.
